These pages began as places to store and organize various documents.  Over time they evolved into places not only to store and organize documents but to analyze and interpret them.  To tease out stories about the people whose lives they describe.  And there are some pretty remarkable stories, as we're still discovering.

Historians ask three basic questions of any document:  (1) What does it say?  (2) How do we interpret what it says?  (There's a bunch of sub-questions here:  Who created it?  Why?  Is it reliable?  How do its contents relate to everything else we know?  Et cetera.  To interpret a document is basically to critically evaluate it.)   (3) What can we conclude from it?

These "Documents Pages" follow a slightly different format.  They begin with a set of (1) guiding questions — the main questions we're asking of the documents we're looking at.  Then they offer (2) evidence and interpretations, a summary and analysis that is our response to the three basic questions.  After that come (3) the documents — the guts of the page, on which everything else is based.  The last section (4) offers a conclusion that summarizes the page's findings and suggests where to go next.

That's the general scheme anyway.  Not every page follows this format, but most do.  To read more about the relationship between the disciplines of history and genealogy, or at least some of Mike's thoughts on the subject, click here.

It's our intent that the pages be read in the sequence they're presented.  Finally, if anyone out there detects any factual errors or interpretive infelicities, we'd be glad to hear about them.
