Slides slides slides.
Our dad was crazy for slides. It was a distinctive postwar
tradition, especially popular, one would think, among modernist,
innovation-minded, hobby-oriented GI Bill engineers and
architects - men like Harry. Over the years he accumulated a mountain of slides - of
people, buildings, bridges, interiors, landscapes,
streetscapes, golf courses
- lots of golf courses. Thousands of golfing slides
relegated to history's dustbin. We
are not kidding. Thousands.
This Minnesota photo gallery, as extensive as it is, represents
the cream of the slide crop. Harry was a very good photographer
when he put his mind to it, which was sporadically. Sadly,
he took precious few photos of Grandma, Uncle Ed, Aunt Grace, or other people
whose stories are told in these pages. Still, despite its
lacunae it's a pretty fun collection. Dates are film
processing dates stamped on the slide. Not all photos here
are slides, though the vast bulk are.
We begin
with Minnesota photos before
1958, the year Harry evidently adopted photography as a
hobby.
