19 Old Family Photos

From a small photo album that Mom gave to Sue, 1940s-60s

1515 Highland Parkway from before its construction in 1940 to the 1950s

1.  This photo is from the site of 1515 Highland before it was built, looking south toward the golf course -- the old Highland Water Tower is visible in the center horizon.  Mom's caption on back:  "Another old picture I had never seen before.  The site on Highland Pkwy before the house was built.  See our telephone pole?"

2.  Marvelous photo taken in mid-winter from atop Highland Sledding Hill on Highland Golf Course, looking north & east toward 1515 & the Highland Pkwy neighborhood before many houses were built . . . ca. 1940-1.  Mom's caption on back:  "See the barn near the end of the street.  It must have gone with the two farm houses to the left."

3.  Rear of 1515 Highland Pkwy looking north & east toward the golf course -- note the size of the crabapple tree on the east side of the house, and the person on the golf course throwing a ball; and the car parked in the street, which an expert could probably identify . . . Mom's caption on rear:  "Old Highland". 

4.  The dining room of 1515 Highland during the reign of Harold Sr. & R.G.  Date unknown, ca. 1950s.

5.  1515 Highland living room -- note the birch logs in the fireplace, which sat there from 1940 till 1968, when R.G. toted them all up to his crawlspace in his room . . .   See also the MN Photo Pages for more of the old house and the building of the addition in the early 1970s.

6.  Mom's caption on rear:  "Found this old picture  Left to right Cliff, Aunt Betty, Marilee, Me and old Hazel herself.  Must be 1952."  Plaque looks like it says "Indian Battle Ground."

17.  Must be Christmas 1962 since Mark's still a baby and he was born July '61.  Terrible quality photo -- somebody was too hasty pulling the whatchamacallit layer off the Polaroid picture!  From left:  Grandpa Harold, Grandma Margaret, Paul, Sue, Tom (crying), Grandma, Mom holding Michael, Mark, R.G.  Mom's caption on rear:  "What a wild looking crew!!"  Must've just moved into the new house in Fridley -- our first Christmas there.

17a-f.  Croppings.  A rare photo that includes Grandma, Mom & all five kids and three representatives of the Schroeder side!  Also a nice one of Mom & Michael (ages 34 & 4).

18.  Polaroid taken around the same time -- Matt I, Sue, Paul, Michael, Tom, Mark, around Christmas 1962.  Mom's caption:  "Look at the ears on Matt -- not to mention the wild looking kids!"

19.  Fridley, August 1962.  Sue & Grandma at left, Dad sawing board on right.  This is the front deck on 8066 Ruth Street.  Mom's caption:  "What a funny picture    this is the front deck in Fridley".
