This table of the 239 deaths recorded in the Town of Castleton over a six year period (1 Jan 1897 -- 31 Dec 1902) was constructed mainly in order to put the deaths in John Delehanty's nuclear family into a broader social context.  After learning of the shattering of his nuclear family from 1899 to 1903, I wondered how common such spates of death were in this time and place.  What were the patterns of sickness and mortality in the broader community?  Was death by tuberculosis common?  What about other respiratory ailments?  These data offer a singular snapshot of disease and mortality patterns over a six-year period in a representative slate quarrying community in the Vermont-New York slate districts.

The table itself (also accessible as an Excel file) is followed by various analyses of the data, beginning at a community-wide level and ending with Delehanty Deaths 1897-1903.
