Muskoka Cottage Bathroom Remodel

July 2007

Back to Index of Mike's Recent Pix

On this page appear the 40-plus photos taken during 14 days of bathroom demolition and construction at the Faires cottage on Lake Muskoka, July 11-24, 2007.   Construction undertaken mainly by Mike, with all reproductive labor (cleaning, cooking, provisioning) undertaken by Nora -- including endless trips to Home Depot, Canadian Tire, the IGA, etc. etc., invariably performed with great cheer and dispatch.  We (Nora & Mike) would like to extend our gratitude to John Peters for his very generous and welcome help over two full days -- from top to bottom, literally (from tarring the roof to digging out the crawlspace underneath the bath drain!); to Cousin David Hatch for so generously giving of his time & expertise in hooking up all the electrical; and to Doug & Barbara for all their help, including capping off the pipes and use of their facilities while the log cottage's were on the mend.  Thanks also to Dennis & Rob of Fixtures for timely work on the plumbing, and to Cousin Bruce.  Finally, we thank fortuna / the gods / the spirit-that-moves-in-all-things-constructionwise -- whatever you want to call it -- that things pretty much worked out, with no catastrophes and a new comfy & tetanus-free bathroom.  Yay!

David!

At Doug & Barbara's.

Nora & David, nearing dusk on Wed 11 July or thereabouts.

Demo!

The old.

At least the old tileboard's not glued to the wall.

Fun!

The new tub not yet exactly where it should be, with the chief cook & quartermaster in the background.

Didn't this drywall come with free installation?  Who's that in the kitchen?

Bare bones.

From the kitchen.

End of day 3, maybe (Wed-Thurs-Fri).

Proof that Prof. Peters insists on getting to the bottom of things.

As if more proof were needed!

St Peters.

Pesky floor joist will make for a tight squeeze around the water heater!

Where's the wide angle lens when you need it?

One idea was to candystripe the sewer stack.  Plumbers should arrive tomorrow (Mon).

Moving in closer . . .

. . . for all you ceramic tile & plumbing fixture aficionados.

John staining the bifold door to the soon-to-be utility room.

Note the impeccable attention to detail, an ethic than infuses all of Prof Peters' work.

Meanwhile, inside the bathroom, a series of almost imperceptible changes slowly begin to accumulate . . .

The fan!

Bill the Telephone Guy!  A phone jack in the bedroom!

The blessed fruit of Prof Peters labors!  Drainage!

Tile's in!  Drywall's up!  Sink pipes moved back!  One week on!

From the kitchen.

The 2x4 bisecting the image and related hints of space-in-formation lend a rough-hewn aesthetic to an otherwise quasi-elegant roomscape.  Plus the weather was great!   [ No photos of drywall mudding or painting or grouting; we don't want to get yucky stuff all over the digital camera now do we? ]

Staining trim!

(Stance learned in wood-staining school.)

Temporarily stunned by the fumes, apparently.

Temporarily recovered . . .

Ever notice how some jobs seem to get more press than others?

Trim!

Robe hook!  Now you know we're getting close!

Cleaning goddess . . .

From the kitchen . . .

. . . finishing touches . . .

We'd've taken more photos of the (almost) finished product, but we figured that you, gentle viewer, would be better served by experiencing the full splendor of the new bathroom yourself!

And that's all folks!
